A thought that popped into my head: what if the government is trying to make the internet dystopian on purpose knowing everyone's gunna hate it so much that they quit the internet, then they'd have to spend time reading books, rebuilding literacy rates amongst children, open libraries, reform community, making information actually valuable again, so we can stop retards like streamers from being the idols of the forthcoming generations?

>governments want literate populations
Do they also want their populations armed and organized?

Quite literally the opposite. Since modern societies are so dependent on the internet for various aspects of life, govt and corpos will try to do whatever they want with it and people just have to cope, lest they be barred from participating in mainstream society. If anything, 'internet personalities' just serve mindless entertainment at best (bread and circuses) or propaganda (FUD, polarization, astroturfing) at worst.

fair points. I didn't think about what our world would look like if we didn't have any way to keep our governments in check or know what's going on with the tech/weapons at their disposal. I'm coping so hard I'm blocking out common sense... any vpn's you'd recommend?

Fun fact
The reason Syria didn’t fall during the Arab Spring is because they didn’t shut the Internet off, so people stayed home or organized on Facebook and they could crack down on their meeting locations.
Although I think you’re wrong in that people will stop using the internet. They’ll complain for a few weeks or months before going along with it.

As if a gov would do something good for us. Come on.
Anyway they are basically killing something that was already dead for years.
How many times did we all thought: "I wish this pile of shit the internet has become would just die and a new internet would come." Well, first part is done, now a new better internet will come.
