At this point I'm 100% sure people keep shitting on Gimp out of tradition.
V3 finally made that heap perfectly usable and it works well for me.

did they fix the default keybinds? that's really my only gripe with it, the hotkeys suck. I don't mind the other differences it has with photoshop with like, layer boundaries or whatever.

Krita is what I use. Some of its tools are great, some are lame. I make brush packs for it and the format is insane (XML embedded in the PNG metadata of the preview image of the brush). I'm hoping it'll be great in a few more years, but development is slow. I had a PR merged months ago and it's not out yet.
