GNU is actually very irrelevant in the context of the whole system. The only part that WAS essential to run the kernel and a userland was GRUB, but systemd has also taken that over as well as 10 other bootloaders.

Every single part of GNU can be excised without severe consequences. It's optional userland. The kernel can be built entirely without GNU tools and libraries. GNU tried really hard to break compatibility and force the spread of their commie shite, but it was ultimately futile. GNU is optional, and frankly, poorly made bloatware.

Linux, however, *is* the operating system.

GNU is a part of the puzzle but it ain't the main part. Arguably part of the glue. But it's a replaceable part.
But what Stallman misses is that, when people speak of "Linux", they're usually not talking about the kernel. They're talking about a family of operating systems/distros that have been categorized under that particular name, largely because it's the least replaceable part in those systems. Plus it sounds cooler than "GNU" with a pronounced G.
If we're going to include "GNU" in the family name, there's lots of other bits of software we might as well include as well. SystemD. Pulse. X/Wayland. GNOME/KDE. The list goes on and on.
