What is the hold up

why are we not doing that

I thought we were way closer to it as a kid but where is the progress

Because its expensive and even short stretches in low gravity does all kinds of damage to human bodies and thats not even mentioning radiation

Because every time we try to do something cool in space someone always bitches about it.
Back in the day if someone complained that the government was wasting too much money on space you could just call them a commie and they would be sent to the gulag. If we want to secure our birthright that is the stars then we need to start doing that again.

Because human space travel is sci fi fantasy nonsense. Humans are biologically tethered to our environment the same way a fish has to live in water. Space is horrifically damaging to the fish l human body, requires a bunch of additional life support functions (radiation shielding, heating, oxygen and ideally artificial gravity) as well as food, water, medicine, it takes years just to travel to nearby planets, decades to explore the solar system and millions of years to go anywhere else. The only potential option for space exploration is using robots.

it really all comes down to the fact that rockets suck.
they're hundred million dollar machines that almost exclusively get thrown away after a single use. and all to launch maybe a few tons to LEO, or almost nothing beyond that.

god willing the next generation of reusable heavy lift and shlv rockets like nuglin, lm9, and starship will ameliorate this somewhat. but even then it won't be like your star wars movies

Sending things into space is really expensive. Currently $1500/kg via Space-X, $50k/kg when we had the Space Shuttle. Though I suppose Space-X is effectively a taxi cab, while the Shuttle was like sending up a whole RV.

Our best technology for getting things up there is putting it on top of a big bomb and controlling the explosion.

We don’t have the technology to predictably produce things out of energy. So any spaceship will have to be a miniature Earth, everything needed to survive and maintain it will need to be brought along.

Things are really far away. And moving. Fast.

There’s little in between things in space. It'll be a long and boring trip. We’re like an ant trying to traverse a tabletop the size of North America, LA to NY. And any roadside attraction on the way is off the direct-line path.

With current technology, it’ll take a year to get to Mars. One way. When our orbits line up. Remember, everything is moving.
Even light takes at least 3 minutes at minimum distance.
