Why is this shit so fucking expensive? Youtube doesn't even do shit as a company, yet they want $20 a month for background play and a built in add blocker?

I've always wondered this about paid YT, do they actually allow you to download a standard video file or is the download DRM'd?

Why would you pay for features you can get for free through Newpipe?

DRM, it only works in the app, and you have to connect every 30 days or it stops working

No, I got premium on the student plan discount while delivering pizzas as I didn’t know of alternative adblocks/background play options for when I was driving during work. The download puts it on your device, but it’s inaccessible app data in a proprietary data/file type, and it can only operate with the YouTube player. They limit you to force reliance, but who expected otherwise?

If you need to download a YouTube vid last I tried a couple years back you could still do so with VLC, I was clipping vids this way to save edited sections as webms. Don’t know if they patched this out yet.

/g/tards think that storing one exabyte of data (with an additional 5 petabytes being added each day) costs nothing

Not happening, we have more luck in seeing youtube broken in two by antitrust. Because of all the individual regulations pushed by individual countries, it's now way too complicated and expensive to run a competitor. At that point only tiktok or instagram long form could compete.

They wouldn't need to store so much data if they didn't actively encourage the uploading of as much hours of slop as possible.

Those videos are not stored in the void, Anon. They have to pay for the hardware and all the employees working in those data centers. Yes, there is the ad money, but perhaps it's not enough. Also, people pay for it, so why lowering it?
