Aside from the stupid name, this turned out to be a decent budget switch. Thanks for recommending it to me /g/, I owe you one.

They've got plenty of reviews complaining about whiny fans, overheating and going down to 1gbps or 100mbps, among other problems.

They're clearly not just a rebranded Cisco or similar tier product. They're chink shit and they've got the quality you'd expect from that.

Their best router (in non-rack case) has 1x 2.5G, 1x SFP+ and 8x 1G with PoE. 95% of home users and on-site deployments would get a gigantic upgrade if they just bumped those shitty 1G-s to 2.5G-s and the PoE to PoE++. If you have fiber, the ISP pushing 2G instead of 1G is much much easier now, since they don't have to dig shit anymore. I know that's not Mikrotik's primary market but by god would that shit sell...

It would be hard to compete with Ubiquiti in that space.

They already have the Dream router 7 which has 1x SFP+ and 4x 2.5GbE and 2x2 Wifi 7 2.4/5/6ghz.
Or the UCG-Fiber which has 2x SFP+, 1x 10GbE, and 4x 2.5GbE, but no wifi.

Both are $280.

The router you're referring to with 1x 2.5GbE 7x 1GbE and 1x SFP+ with no wifi is $220.

So Mikrotik would need to find a way to add wifi and 2.5GbE, or add another SFP+ and a 10GbE as well as 2.5GbE but no wifi all for less than ~$60 more than the current product to compete with the Ubiquiti products.

I just don't see it, at least not at the moment.

Both of those are very different from the full PoE variant of the Mikrotik. Half the number of ports and only 1 is PoE on both of them... Also the RB5009 is an ethernet router, no wifi needed, the entire point is that you should be able to run multiple wifi7 AP's from one small form machine and a few cams. The Dream 7 is gigantic and will never fit into a network closet, UCG Fiber is almost good but has too few ports and no PoE++ which is what you need for most decent wifi7 AP's. A hypothetical RB6009 would need a bigger case to cool all that shit ofc but it wouldn't need to be THAT much bigger. Also paying more is no problem since you get much less faggy software with Tiks and longterm updates. Extra points for being a EU product which is important to a lot of people now and might be a requirement in some places if you want government contracts.

>UCG Fiber is almost good but has too few ports and no PoE++ for most decent wifi7 AP's
What Wifi 7 AP uses PoE++?
The only ones I can think of are ones designed for auditorium/stadium use where they're expecting 1000+ clients connected simultaneously.

Any standard office AP is going to be between 10 and 30 watts, which can be done with PoE or PoE+.

Beyond that, you're ignoring the possibility of network switches, which seems retarded. Oh no you need more ports? 5-8 port 2.5GbE switches are $50-100. And PoE switches are also a thing.

Also the model you're referring to with PoE only has PoE+, not PoE++, and it's $300 instead of $220.

I get it, Ubiquiti popular so it MUST be bad, but come on, at least make a serious argument

EVERYTHING ubiquiti is not only made in China, but entirely and thoroughly backdoored
Try placing a firewall between your Ubiquiti router and WAN
Block Chinese IP addresses and you will no longer have internet through the Ubiquiti

Everything is backdoor'd on the hardware layer. What are you going to do? Route on a Raspberry PI? Guess what, it's backdoor'd as well.

In Ubiquiti's case its because latvian labor is significantly cheaper than US labor, and they can siphon talent from Mikrotik AND take advantage of their investment into Latvian universities in training that Mikrotik has made for students specifically for that field since the late 1990s when they started operating. By the time Ubiquiti rolled into Riga in 2014 Mikrotik had been grooming future employees through the local university system for years already.

Ubiquiti's Latvian office is an R&D hub, not a sales office.

Anon, 48 port switches from other brands, even relatively cheap brands, are hundreds or thousands of dollars more expensive depending on what specs you need (PoE/PoE+/PoE++/1GbE/2.5GbE/10GbE/SFP/SFP+, etc)
Even a basic bitch 48x 1GbE PoE+ switch is almost $600 from ubiquiti and it only has 195W of PoE power budget (vs 400W from the Nicgiga switch). And only 32 ports of the 48 are PoE+, the rest are unpowered.

Ubiquiti does have a 48 port that offers PoE+ on every port (and PoE++ on around 30% of them) with 600W total power budget, but it costs $1100.

So yes, $289 for a 48 port PoE switch is dirt fucking cheap and anyone that NEEDS a 48 port PoE switch should probably spend the money on something that isn't bottom of the barrel chinkshit unless they're running on a shoestring budget.

Nope, again the entire reason they have an R&D office there is to siphon talent from Mikrotik directly, and indirectly through the local universities Mikrotik has spent 2+ decades building a pipeline for students there to get into that field specifically.

They've ALSO got US-based R&D, but why not take advantage of a cheap source for people specifically being trained to work on embedded router systems and the related UX/UI/OS work that's involved in that field? They don't need to be the best in the world, they don't need to be triple PhD MIT grads. You can still hire those guys too, but usually as a higher-up team lead or similar role and again, in the US.
