What's the point of HDMI ARC?
If you have a ps3, a ps4, a tv, and some speakers, then you just connect the ps3 and ps4 to the tv and the tv to the speakers, where does arc come in?

A Toslink cable between your TV and your AV receiver only has a fraction of the bandwidth of an HDMI cable and usually does compressed 5.1 audio at most.

Yes. The appeal of ARC is that you have one less cable. If you have good cable management, that's usually not much of a bonus but for the average rat's nest behind most people's entertainment center, having one less cable is useful.

instead of sending dumb waveforms for the sound system to play, my pc sends it a stream of commands like "play this waveform 5ft to the left and 3ft behind the viewer in 30ms", and it is rendered in real time, and it's a lot of information with tight timings that any other standard can't handle

As >>106239075 said, it makes a lot of sense not to run two cables
- to get video from an AV receiver (switching external sources) to the TV
- to get audio from the TV (usually broadcasts) to the AV receiver
when one bidirectional cable can do it.

In addition to what other anons say, ARC also gives the connected device a standard way to interact with the TV and do things like unify the volume control. It's basically Bluetooth but over wire, and support for that kind of behavior is really inconsistent between different TVs.

So you can do 2.1 stereo with a shitty noisy dac and preamp

If only there was a digital output called "HDMI ARC" that you could use to connect to real equipment instead

It amazes me that people are so oblivious to HDMI CEC.
It's the single meaningful advantage HDMI has over DisplayPort when it comes to video entertainment, yet people who pretend to know their shit are completely unaware of this.

>>106238531 (OP)
The point of ARC is that you turn on the TV and your speakers (or AV receiver) turn on automatically and switch to the correct scene/EQ. Any sound from the TV gets passed to the speakers, including plain old broadcasts.
When you turn off the TV, speakers turn off as well so you don't need to fiddle with multiple remotes like a neanderthal.
Any other answer is wrong and retarded.

it'll work. the hdmi standard was a poorly thought out and poorly implemented standard that wastes a shitload of bandwidth and limited itself to what kind of data could be sent and how, so we have these additions to the standard to cope with the original spec's abysmal failure to plan for the future.

it's a common use-case, many modern AV receivers are also HDMI switches, so you'd have 1 HDMI going from the TV (ARC) to the AV, and then your boxes/consoles are plugged into the AV rather than the TV

One other reason is that AV receivers can be behind the times in regard to feature and bandwidth support for HDMI
ARC allows you to use an older receiver and let the TV handle video where it's best handled

You know what's gay? My TV supports ONLY digital audio output, there is NO OTHER WAY AT ALL to get the broadcast signal's audio out of it. And for some fucked up reason it doesn't like my preamp, which has a digital input. It's all ADAT and I don't understand how it doesn't work unless it's putting out some weird sample rate and bit depth that my preamp doesn't support. So I have to use the TV speakers if I am watching TV. It blows.
