it is all catchy and somewhat clever but unfortunately the entirety of all religions are completely made up, based on wishes and dreams, and told from the perspective of starving, sickly, hallucinating peasants who believed the area immediately surrounding their homeland was the whole entire world. of course he can refuse taking his meds, but he's obviously not doing well. being bipolar, he can be too unpredictable and if he wants to see his kids, they need to be safe. they too deserve a healthy and happy dad, not the mess that he's now. the medication would help soften the swings a lot.
bipolar is a really tricky one, because on their highs, they feel absolutely fantastic and don't see why they would ever need any help or medication. and then, the next day or the say they fall into this bottomless pit again.
politics aside, he really needs therapy and should consider taking his medication. life could be "normal" again for him - as far as normal for ye goes

no, the meds do help. in case of bipolar disorder they seem "tranquilizing" only because the highs get forced down to a more managable state. everything is "tranquilized" compared to a person in a manic state, especiall if you're used to the mania.
also, most psy-meds have a rough first 1-6 weeks, before the brain gets used to them and your brain feels normal again. sadly a lot of people stop taking them in this period.
