Life is not a video game. As much as we wish them to be, guns and bullets are not magic retard deleters and aren't always lethal to begin with, much less instantly.
You'd be thoroughly amazed how many people get shot every day with pistols, rifles and even shotguns at different ranges with different types of rounds and survive. A good deal of them with little to no permanent injury.
It doesn't matter if it's a pistol or a rifle. A full metal jacket or a bonded soft point. Shot placement is always more important than the round and caliber you're using.
Even though it's the most effective means, self defense is not about killing people. It's about stopping them from killing you. As long as the threat is ended, whether they live or die is irrelevant.
Given the state of the legal systems in just about every country that has one, it might very well be better for the defender if the assholes live.
