there should be hierarchies and rites of passage and systems of morals with reward/punishment, and moreover there should be deep bonds which exist for their own sake & feel closer than anything else could
the motivation should be environmental. if all the monkey experiments and shit during the 1960s proved anything, it's that.
for another example, look to drug addictions.
no one ever beats an addiction by sitting in a room and NOT doing the behavior they're addicted to, but rather by finding other things to do instead, and finding some sort of place in the world.
