Best take. Trying to de-escalate with someone who doesn't think rationally is coin flip odds at best. Some people see reason or at least feel pacified by your attempt; but others see it as weakness and an opportunity to assert themselves further. The moment hands are laid on you is the moment you should either fight or flee. I don't think fleeing was an option here because they were on a narrow path, would have had to abandon their bikes, and may have further emboldened the lunatic. Just carry mace, spray the cunt, and fuck off to avoid getting sued. If he keeps trying to attack after getting sprayed, he'd have a pretty hard time stabbing or shooting you and it's 2v1 anyway. Doesn't look like there was anyone else around or I'd expect them to have intervened, so getting away without other witnesses was likely very doable.
