GIFs are still supported on here, but its a legacy format that's been rendered pretty much obsolete by WEBM. This board being called /gif/ is also legacy, because the board was created back during a time when GIFs were the norm and before WEBMs had yet been invented. If this board were to be created today it almost certainly wouldn't be called /gif/ but it is a product of its time and it most likely continues because changing it to anything else would break a lot of links and cause a lot of unnecessary complications as opposed to just simply rolling with it.

As someone who has encoded some webms myself, I find the file size limit to be workable. Sure, having more would be better, but a limit always has to be made somewhere, and you can get decent results out of 4MB if you know what you're doing and do it optimally. Having it at 4MB kinda forces people to at least try to make the best of it. If the limit were 50MB or whatever like a lot of people want, it would result in a lot of sloppy unoptimized work with the encoding. You don't NEED to have a video that has a 10,000 Kbps bitrate. But if anons could get away with it, videos like that would become the norm and flood the board.
