Tsarist Russia was an agrarian, semi-feudal, and deficient country with very low development, where you literally died in the street. Forty years after the Communists took power, they became the second atomic superpower, the first to conquer space. They sent the first man into space... and not just any man, but the son of a carpenter... the son of a milkmaid...
But of course, after World War II, and since the fascists couldn't defeat them, the US made it its personal crusade to fight Communism wherever it appeared.
Name me a country where socialism didn't work, and I'll show you how the most powerful country in human history bombed ports, factories, and railway stations, assassinated union leaders, gave money to death squads, and armed fundamentalist guerrillas.
But even so... No country in the last 30 years has progressed like China. I dare say that no country in human history, without some war or conflict (whether they invade others or other countries become indebted to them while their industry remains intact), has achieved the progress that China has achieved.
