Italians dont call themselves white because whites in America, for the majority of Amercas history, did not refer to Italians as "white". They share a genetic ancestry to descendents of the Caucasus mountains, but being Caucasian isnt the same as being "white". Italians were heavily discriminated against in early America. Why would they call themselves white when whites hated them? Wouldn't make sense.
Its wild that I have to explain this, ehat are you kids learning in school nowadays? Metal Gear Solid 5 even included the song "Here's to you Nicola and Bart", since it was a song about two Italians blamed and murdered for a crime there was no proof they committed in the 1920s, (which fits the thematic narrative of MGS5)
