Correction: the article's statistics are from the year 2016, or from a non-calendar year that overlaps it, not over a five-year period. I read it hastily.
I looked up the same statistics for 2023, the latest year for which all of them have been compiled, using the articles mentioned. Skip to the end for the final calculations.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/195325/murder-victims-in-the-us-by-weapon-used/
For all murders using handguns in the US in 2023, I summed those using handguns, rifles, shotguns, other guns, or firearms whose type is not stated, for a total of 13,529.
The number of murders using knives or other cutting instruments was 1,562.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/978830/knife-homicides-in-england-and-wales/
For 2023-24, there were 262 homicides involving a knives or a sharp instruments in England and Wales.
https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/offencesinvolvingtheuseofweaponsdatatables
For 2023-24, there were 25 homicides involving a gun in England and Wales.
https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/populationestimates/bulletins/annualmidyearpopulationestimates/mid2023
The population of England and Wales in mid-2023 was 60,854,700.
https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2022/12/happy-new-year-2023.html
The US population was estimated at 334,233,854 on 1 January 2023.
Therefore, per million of population, these are the approximate homicide statistics for 2023:
Firearms homicides in the US: 40.48
Knife homicides in the US: 4.67
Firearms homicides in the UK: 0.41
Knife homicides in the UK: 4.30
So, assuming the statistics I used are correct, the factors that homicides in the US exceeded those in the UK in 2023 per capita were 16.6 for guns and 1.09 for knives. The UK seems to be catching up, but isn't nearly as bloody as the US, even in case of knife homicides.
