Yeah, but there are tools to make it easier. When stitching the individual frames in GIMP, you can use the Difference mode for a layer to align two parts of a stitch as best as possible. You can then use a transparency layer mask and a gradient to get rid of stitch seams along the intersection of two layers.

Stitches for scenes with diagonal panning like >>8547890 are the devil, though. They require an insane amount of work to put together because you can't just pick two or three loops from the pan - you have to capture the ENTIRE thing and work on it frame by frame. Worse yet, you also have to deal with diagonal stitch seams, which I still haven't figured out how to fully address, given that a lot of video encoding doesn't support transparency gradients along frame edges.

Stitches in cardinal directions are pretty easy, though. Often you'll only need to take like 2-3 screenshots of every loop frame from 2-3 positions in the pan: one near the start, one near the end, and possibly one in the middle. Pic related is an example of a simple cardinal stitch. These kinds of scenes are nearly ideal for stitched animation loops.

A couple of things to watch out for:
1. The first and final loops may not encompass the whole animation.
2. The animation loop may change mid-pan.
3. The background scrolling may not match the speed of the animation.

I think the rough edges are symptomatic of transparency pixels. Make sure you retain the alpha channels. And yeah, image panoramas work way better. Luckily there's stuff like VLC's scene filters available to capture frame data from a video.

I'll elaborate on the VLC frame capture stuff. VLC can be used to dump every frame of a video as an image file to some folder. To enable this, do the following:
>Click Tools on the toolbar at the top of the VLC UI
>Click Preferences
>Look on the bottom-left corner of the pop-up and click the All radio button on the Show Settings radio button group
>Click on the Video dropdown
>Click on the Filters dropdown
>Click on the Scene Filters option

This will bring up the menu shown in this image. Copy the settings you see here (although you should alter the Directory Path Prefix to a folder on your PC that you can remember).

Now click on the Filters menu again and enable the Scene video filter checkbox on the right. This will enable the actual frame dumping.

REMEMBER TO TURN THE SCENE FILTER BACK OFF IF YOU'RE JUST CASUALLY WATCHING VIDEOS. You don't wanna clog your drive(s) with tons of images.

You can then use the dumped frames to generate stitches. That's how I got the source images for pretty much every stitch I posted on these threads.

If you look closely at the background, there's a weird fisheye lens effect going on with it. It's some kind of post-processing filter. That means that trying to do plain stitch is impossible. The background will get fucked up. Look at the first frame I generated. The ceiling has a bunch of ugly stitch seams and other artifacts.

I've stopped caring about commercial studio releases at this point. I get more enjoyment out of some amateur solo artists posting their animations on the internet.
