Like all quality tags, it's really just style bias. You can think of it as a weak artist tag. If you prompt a real artist alongside it, it'll just get lost in the mix. Same way they worked on Pony and even SD1.5, there's no way to train a universal "quality" concept.

Their effect is significantly diluted on WAI and other merges, because the creator wants their model to make "quality" images by default. The downside is you can't get rid of the style bias anymore, and it can work against you in some cases. Graphite sketches, anime screenshots, chibi anatomy, diffuse skin shine, etc.
