Is google reverse image search now going completely down the shitter?

I'm not talking about the quality.
Three of my searches were denied. I first assumed it was because of questionable content, but pic rel was also denied.
A most generic hentai picture.
Another blocked picture search I did was sfw crop (with the source being actually straight shota)

So if it's because of content, then google apparently checks both the provided image and results.

Bing is shit
Yandex is ok
Saucenao and similar services are useless for crops.

There’s also been a large push by certain western goverments and payment processors to crack down on anything NSFW on the internet and introduce digital ID’s to ”protect the children”, even though that’s obviously something they just do to get more control over regular people.

These factors may contribute to why pic search sucks now desu.

I also believe payment processor content mafia topic in recent weeks could have something to do with it, but it seems arbitrarily to block certain reverse image searches. It's not like the normal search seems to be censored yet.

There was a big drop in reverse image search quality around the time google moved over to lens.
I think they roughly caught up to that level again, at least google turned to be slightly more useful than Yandex in the last year or so.
My guess was just that, as the database to search grew, the overlap and precision to find specific stuff also got worse which also affects Yandex.
Ai content spam could've accelerated that development.

It's not just sexual content, it won't even reverse search old memes or anything that just looks like a photo. I tried finding an image of a guy that brought a duckling to his university class from 2011, and it outright said it was a content violation.

I feel the pain on this one, I have been trying to locate the source of this for days on end without any helpful hint from reverse search, had the exact same error when attempting to do it via Google and other engines just don't find a close match. What's worse, I region picked one half of the pic, which led me to a post in a korean website, that had an even more cropped version of picrel.

Saucenao isn't indexing new images from pixiv anymore for some reason. I think it started around the beginning of 2024. It hasn't been indexing new mangadex chapters even longer, but mangadex ended up having its own issue.

I've tried twice in that board. Some fellas do indeed get their sauce found in there, typically real life naked women and sex tape screenshots compared to mangas. Then reverse search now comes up with this fucking thing that's of no help at all. This image actually came from the /aco/ female bondage thread but I don't know why some psycho faggot replied so rudely to "kys" when someone was just politely asking for the sauce. Some good news and bad news.

Bad news is that this is probably a private commission. I have no clue who the artist is or if there is even more than just that page.

The good news is that I know the image is a parody of Mahou Shoujo Western Girls/魔法少女ウェスタンガールズ.
Pic related by Suukaizou drew the same scenario which is about as close as it gets.

If only you knew how reverse searching works.
If you want an image to be possible to reverse searchable, it's simple, just PHash, only a tiny string that takes no space.
But if you want to compare against cropped data? Now you gotta store detailed features using something like ORB or even worse, a CNN which takes a fuck ton of compute and runs at like few images per second on consumer GPUs.
But even with something like that, if you do extreme crops like below 20% of original image, it's not going to work unless you store so much data that it almost takes as much space as the original images.
With simple PHash, literally anyone can make a system themselves as each image would just be a tiny hash that takes a few bytes, depending on accuracy.
Rough estimate at 36, 64, 128 and 576 bit PHash, if you had 1TB of storage, you could store 125 billion, 83.33 billion, 41.66 billion and 10.41 billion files respectively.
Though that is only for the hash itself, if you want to store what file is tied to, expect it to be reduced by 50-75% at 36, 50-ish% at 64, maybe 25% at 128 and 10% at 576 bit (rough estimates)
But for handling crops with something like ORB, the storage requirements explode and can take up 10% the size of the original image. More or less depending on accuracy.
Considering how much data there is on the internet, I can understand why they are severely lacking or is unreliable with crops.
And to make it even worse, all data is increasing at an insane rate. Especially now that AI is a thing.
Nothing is stopping you from making your own search for Pixiv though. Even with ORB, if you're fine with less accurate crops, like having 50% original image, then you can make it go pretty low. Even more so if using 7z on the database afterwards.
You don't even have to store the images permanently, can just download, add to database, delete.
I should probably just do something myself, since I already have 10TB of pixiv, all of E621 and 3TB of Sankaku lmao.
