Good question, its frown upon, but I think there are tons of polyamorous people in every society as well. I guess to play devils advocate just a little more, even if we "did" literally punish cheating at one point. Shouldn't we appeal to the current world's standards as a way to say it is socially tolerable? And while divorce can be seen as a form of "punishment".. I guess (it could also be seen as a good thing if both parties are in favor or it, it is technically more of a solution than punishment legally speaking) its still not quite the same social punishment we do for the truly unacceptable acts we deem "not ordinary/vanilla" like murder.
Some countries may still do that, but we also don't view that as an acceptable response to cheating either, we don't see that response as an ordinary solution. So they kind of already fall outside what we would call "vanilla" in that regard.
I'm still curious if you think it would be vanilla in the natural world. There's a difference between legality and social acceptability. Cheating, by and large, is not socially acceptable - both because of the socioeconomic downsides of illegitimate children and the emotional and personal damage it deals to the person being cheated on.

I'd say vanilla amounts to situations where sex IS largely acceptable, both in and out of relationships.
