VAE ruins details when you do not have close-up images in the dataset, and then a second time when you generate in low resolution. Upscaling/Hiresfix solves the latter, balancing the dataset takes more work.

There's a much bigger problem in how messy the images are. Onomatopoeia, speech bubbles, motion lines and more all over the place, random chicken scratch shading on the background, those damn irises,...
There's no good way to tag it all, so any lora you bake will be hard to control, adding those things unprompted and not always in places where it makes sense.

Adetailer is the most popular recommendation. Personally, I cheat a bit as RealESRGAN_x4plus_anime_6B.pth fixes a lot of these sorts of issues during upscaling for "free", at the cost of It introducing its own bias. I've been very happy with the results after WAI 0.90/1.40/1.50, using dpmpp_2m karras with 0.45 denoise on the upscaler phase. I use 20 steps typically, but give it up to 40 if the intermediate image has a lot of localized melting. You can get away with pushing the denoise a little higher, but 0.45 already introduces a lot of bias.
If hyperfixated on getting good results, there's unfortunately no real substitute for inpainting. At that point. I use Krita with the ai_diffusion plugin hooked into a ComfyUI backend, as a traditional painting UI is better than any web UI when zooming in that far.
