Stirner was the reason Marxism was purely materialistic in its outlook. Neither Marx nor Engels could refute the spook accusations for higher order moralism.
Basically he banged the last nail into the coffin for any kind of reconciliation between marxism and the idealistic outlooks of previous republican and pre-republican ideologies of the time.
