For anyone younger than 60.

Brian Wilson is the lead singer and main writer of The Beach Boys. A popular group of the 60s-80s. Though note that their comeback in the 80s is widely scorned as not the "true" Beach Boys.

Also an odd historical addendum. Him and Charles Manson were pretty close friends for a while (back before the Manson family murders). They had a pretty serious falling out when Charles Manson claims Brian Wilson stole his song (while changing the lyrics to be quite a bit less creepy).

The house of the Sharon Tate Manson Murders used to belong to Brian Wilson and it's believed that was who he was trying to have killed.

Well if we're nominating popular band singers as the Mozart of the 20th century, here are my entries:
Ozzy Osbourne
Ronnie James Dio
Freddie Mercury
Robert Plant
Udo Dirkschneider
Bruce Dickinson
Hansi Kürsch
Yes I am 100% unironic and as far as I know not autistic

The reason Brian in particular gets a lot of credit is because of his composition and use of harmony moreso than his lyricism. In fact many would argue his lyrics were the weakest part of his songs. God Only Knows is often cited as one of the greatest songs of all time

I mean it's totally fine to enjoy whatever music you want, but all those metal frontmen are NOT the most popular 20th century vocalists by a long shot. You can argue Dio and Ozzy but none of the others certainly

Yeah but to be the Mozart I think would take more than that. The same criteria you apply to Brian could be applied to the ones I named and others. They all innovated and experimented with their vocal chords, achieving amazing results, inspiring young artists, and starting trends and styles that are still followed today.

I would argue Dio more than Ozzy
But the others are pretty big too. Maiden are mainstream, Guardian and Accept more niche but big in their world(s), Plant and Mercury are self-explanatory

you don't even know what the ones I mentioned achieved in their craft
It's ok not to know. Just ask and others can explain/give examples.
It's not ok to act like a fucking monkey and disparage a genre you are completely ignorant of

Unpopular Opinion: Robert Plant was the weakest part of Led Zeppelin. He's a good vocalist, not a great one. There's a reason the Led Zeppelin band were unconvinced he was the right frontman for several albums.

There's many good Zeppelin tracks that would have been **GREAT** with better lyrics. Kashmir and Black Dog for example. Whole Lotta Love. All 9/10 songs that would have been 10 without the cringey lyrics. I also tend not to like rock vocalist with high pitched voices, it just doesn't work as well for me (this is why I find Rush insufferable).

When Led Zeppelin were looking for a lead singer, they really wanted Terry Reid, but he was busy with other projects. Terry Reid is an amazing lyricist and vocalist that's more or less forgotten by history at this point.

I'm 100% Led Zeppelini would be even more famous than The Beatles, with a vocalist who could truly match the instrumentals.

gg allin was more of a shock rock performance artist than any real singer/songwriter.

Shock rock taken to it's furthest extent.

Shock rock has it's place, but Allin doesn't deserve to be spoken of in the same breath as Mozart.
