They're not. They just have a huge margin for error because their country is huge. Rather than an enemy being able to take over Russia in a few hours, the size/weather gives them a chance to recover from their mistakes no matter how competent the opponent is.

Has Russia literally ever put up a legitimately impressive performance in any war ever? People mock the burgers for Vietnam and Iraq, but they absolutely obliterated their opponents in straight up battles, they just couldn’t deal with the insurgencies. Russia can’t even win a conventional war against Ukraine.
