judaism of today is completely unrecognizable from 2nd temple judaism, let alone what came before. the bible isn't a historical document any more than herodotus is.

It's because G-d didn't give the Jews the Torah on Mt. Sinai only for them to be swept away by the whims of the history of man. Chuds hue & cry that Hadrian couldn't vanquish the oral Torah and the eternal wisdom of the Tanakh. Idolatry is fickle, HaShem is eternal.
