Reading the Quran, it was so obvious that Muhammad was a schizo warlord and grifter but Muslim are not bothered with this at all.

If you can accept the Koran as coming from the Holy Ghost (not contradicting the Bible)
You can accept Muhammad as infallible like Joseph Smith (BoM is from Africa)
With that you know that nothing the person actually did was wrong
That doesn't mean all reports about them are true however. So just because something is recorded in a history made by men, doesn't mean it is true, and justifiable under an infallibility lens.

Probably a mix of both, varying in significance from Muslim to Muslim. When you get an actual intelligent, educated (not in terms of Koranic indoctrination), Muslim they'll genuinely admit that Mohammed 'might look bad to some modern views', but for the rank and file average Mohammedan they basically worship the man - so if he did it it must be a good thing
