Many artists of that time didn't know what Native American phenotypes actually looked like, so they drew them how they knew, as either a) dark skinned white people wearing native clothes, or b) African people wearing native clothes

They'd probably have seen some mulatto people, but they'd have to be traveling far inland or have access to anthropological photographs to know what a Native American looks like

I visit a lot of museum galleries and that's how I've seen them explain it. There's a local one which has a fairly realistic portrait but that's because there would've been a small but real Native American presence at the time
