I've always found the inanity of the historiography around Cannae hilarious, it's like these guys don't see why this was a risky move from Hannibal while the Roman plan wasn't exactly wrong. 90% of these armchairs generals say stuff like omg Romans should've fought in a wide formation etc. meanwhile when I look at it I see what the Roman leadership did. The middle of the formation was weak, if the Roman army breaks through it it can leave minimal amount of troops to fight off one flank and defeat enemy in detail. It was risky but the risk would've saved many lives if it worked.
Likewise for Hannibal this was a gamble. If the infantry in the middle of the formation failed to hold he'd have to retreat an army split in two and reconsolidate it while the Romans were in the perfect position to just chase one half of it and check any attempts at it, leading to destruction in detail as mentioned.
