I feel like gorillas would've done a better job at using knowledge and abstract thought.

I dunno. I feel like even in captivity, they do pretty well compared to other great apes. So if they gained our level of intelligence, they would be maybe 15% less aggressive than humans.

Or maybe orangutans would be better. Not the chimpanzees and not the bonobos though.

I'm unironically that hairy.
It just doesn't grow as long; the coverage is about the same, though.

If I remember correctly: Paranthropus was the "gorillas attempt at a hominid".
They were around during Homo Erectus' time and for whatever reason they didn't make it through to the end. They were physically quite robust, nearly twice as large as other hominids in Africa, used simple bone and stone tools, could cook, so it wasn't a lack of technology or physical frailness. Wikipedia says they may have kept the gorillas social tendency towards harems and that may have prevented them from effectively defending themselves from ape-men with larger more mix-gendered congregations. They were also herbivorous, as far as we can tell, which I'd consider a development handicap.

You remember incorrectly. They had nothing to do with Gorillas. They were another branch off of Australopithecus just like the Homo's. In fact some scientist do not even consider them a separate clade from the Australopithecus. There is also no conclusive evidence they used tools besides scavenged bones in a similar manner to chimpanzee's and zero evidence that they could cook. They were also not larger than the Homo's running around at the same, in fact often shorter instead being thicker and stockier hence why some paleontologists call them "Robust Australopithecines"
