A bunch of confederates moved there after the war and founded a town. There was just something about it that reminded them of the old south. Mostly the slavery laws.
Today the town holds a big confederate festival every year.

When the Confederacy lost the war, a good amount of the people moved to Brazil since slavery was still legal. There are towns today in the North East of Brazil that are basically indistinguishable from a small town in Mississippi or Missouri.
