juneteenth june 19, 1865 civil war united states lincoln johnson ulysses grant america freedom
Today marks 160 years since the United States' greatest sin, slavery, had been finally abolished with Texas being forced to abide by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The earliest celebrations of Juneteenth were in 1866, but the holiday didn't receive federal recognition until 2021.

If George Floyd was a field hand in the old south he'd never end up on fentanyl, he'd still be alive at the age he'd be today and likely have a happy family in his slave shack.

This is what burgers do—turn legit ethnic celebrations into token ethnic slop. St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo are far different on their home turf than the commercial drunkfests they’ve become here.
I’m a redneck from Texas and until a couple of years ago, I knew more about Juneteenth than most non-Texan blacks. Wholesome family reunion holiday, big cookouts, cowboy stuff, rural roots even if you’re in Houston or Austin, pride in your people and history—but post 2020 it’s been blown up into a generic blackfest that most African Americans have zero connection with.

>I knew more about Juneteenth than most non-Texan blacks

my brother in Christ, Juneteenth is just an emancipation day.

black people from all over the country celebrated their own emancipation day. sure it may not have been on june 19th. but it was still the same holiday just on a different day.

in Florida they celebrated "Juneteenth" on may 29, in Georgia its may 20th, in Mississippi "juneteenth" was may 8th

Juneteenth as a holiday is not unique to Texas. June 19, is just the day we chose to celebrate all of these different emancipation days across the country.

The photo with my post is captioned “Emancipation Day, Corpus Christi, 1913” and I’ve seen that term used early on in Texas as much as Juneteenth. I’m wondering how the Texas date and terminology gained prominence?

The exact same thing happened with Thanksgiving. Became a regional holiday in the Northeast that went national after everyone else learned about it for the first time.

The Bill of Rights restricted Congress from making laws. According to the Bill of Rights, the Federal Government was subservient to the States. After Abraham conquered the South, the reconstruction amendments were passed at gunpoint. We're all slaves now.

It's not a real holiday but as an American, I don't care because we are deprived of days off of work and/or holiday pay. American wagies need more days off work and I don't give a shit what the pretense is.
