>I have just signed a treaty with the British. They will give me weapons, naval support and artillery. Together we will btfo our mortal enemies from the neighboring principality. All they asked in return is some trade rights.

>Medicine, infrastructure, and technology millennia ahead of ours in exchange for handing over our sovereignty and our women to their BWCs? Sounds like an excellent deal.

It's funny how the ambitions of the East India Company seemed to have been quashed after the first Anglo-Mughal War ended badly for the British. The company meekly accepted the fine from the Mughal emperor and promised to be good boys, and in return the emperor graciously restored their trading privileges within the province of Bengal (because trade with the British was extremely lucrative for the empire).

Then everything went to shit for India when the Mughal emperor died and it sparked a massive civil war that caused the instant collapse of the empire. Total anarchy reigned, every governor and general trying to establish himself as a petty king or new emperor. EIC by necessity had to remilitarize since it's promise not to do so was now defunct with the emperor and empire gone, and this time they fared a lot better now that they weren't facing the combined might of the entire empire.

All the EIC wanted was a suzerain to put order and restore trade before they drowned in debt, so they were happy to cuck out where a prince might stubbornly refuse. However once stability collapsed they had to become the suzerain.
