How does "this is my body" mean "any piece of bread ever used for communion from now until the end of time will be my body"? That seems like a pretty massive leap.
Is there a different verse I'm supposed to cross-reference with this one?
Am I just looking at the wrong translation. As far as I can tell he's using a present tense "is" in the Greek, how does anybody get future tense out of that?

The NIV is not among the better versions, though. Try NKJV.

>52.The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”
>53. Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58. This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
(John 6:52-58)

he's literally talking about communion here?
Anybody who has received communion is promised Heaven, and anyone who has not is promised Hell?

If by "communion," in this sentence, you mean gladly receiving the word of God then yes actually.

See the following Bible references:

"It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."
- John 6:63 (explanation of John 6:52-58)

"Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts."
- Jeremiah 15:16

"For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat."
- Job 34:3

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
- Romans 10:17
