Before the Suez crisis, the USSR firmly believed that a state built by people educated in European universities could eventually be manoeuvred into socialism (even if Zionism itself was considered bourgeois chauvinism). It was only after the Suez crisis that the Soviets understood that working with people such as Nasser or Quwatli was easier than with the Israelis - in fact Egypt's Aswan Dam was built with Soviet money. The 6-day war of 1967 was the final nail in the coffin for Soviet hopes for a friendly Israel.
