They aren't treating Mary as a God, technically, they are asking for intercession. Now of course the minutiae of this is not really relevant to the actual spics praying. But that's more due to a pervading lack of structured religious impulse in almost all Latin Americans. The diverse peoples of the land often seem to start from a bizarre sort of atheism (in so far as the God conceived by the west and the middle east is concerned).
