Can I be a Christian, accept the teachings of Jesus without accepting the Old Testament as historical fact?

Yep, Old Testament is just one billion pages of slop of the jews doing whatever, You'd only miss out the garden of eden and noah on his boat the rest is just filler.

The OT describes the literal creation of the Earth itself so you're still with it whether you like it or not Christard.

"Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"

Even if the Hebrews are a combination of the least relevant and most hateful people on earth, God lent them his ear, and so he can definitely lend it to you.

Remember the New Testament doesn't begin with the story of someone everyone wanted to know and serve - it began with a hobo baby sleeping in an animal trough. It's about what God does with them, and for us.

Not really. I'm guessing the "historical" issues you have come from the first 12 chapters of Genesis? Sure they don't explain evolution or mention dinosaurs, but the very important concept of original sin comes from Genesis. The entire point of Jesus's sacrifice and the redemption of humanity is because of the fall from grace thanks to Adam and Eve.

This is best explained in the New testament.

You don't know who God is if you've never read the Old testament. That is where God himself speaks with his own words in first person. He reveals his character there, you won't know him if you don't believe in.

If you're only bringing it to the level of historical fact then there's no problem. That's a very shallow requirement which doesn't matter one way or the other.
If you take the OT quite seriously at many levels and thus want to maintain it in the present then Christianity doesn't work.
A third approach is to retroactively assign the OT as prophesy for the NT. You only care about the history inasmuch as it proves Christianity.
