Effective in his lifetime. He didnt really do that much because Anatolia was/is a shithole but he created a stable, modern national state on which future generations could build something better.

He forced an unnatural liberalism/nationalism into Anatolia. Sure, Turks today have built a relatively stable industrial nation, a rarity in the Islamic world, but it has come with many issues.

It's basically ethnic greeks, Albanians, balkan slavs, native anatolians, caucasians, etc etc LARPing as central asian nomads. They pushed this weird Turkic identity onto all of these people and today you have this weird identity crisis.

I do think it was smart of them to switch to Latin alphabet and enforce some of the other secular changes, but my point is that if that they could have threaded the needle if they balanced the Islamic side with the secular industrial side.
