It was pushed hard in the 90's, and especially the 00's because the rock acts, especially in the 80's were really expensive to produce, make videos for, and tour with. Also having a band of 4 or 5 guys who write and record is just much harder to work with vs having 1 guy write lyrics, 1 guy come up with beats, and 1 or 2 guys perform on the album. Also the Record company has a lot more leverage because they control the creative process much more.

Not really. Nu metal and metalcore died with the death of album sales, piracy and streaming took over. Again, much more expensive to produce and mix, for less profit. Now the record companies get a cut of merchandise, tours, etc because there is no money in albums for new artists. Old bands make an album maybe once every 10 years, if that because there's no money in it compared to touring. Imagine Dragons went bankrupt on a world tour. My appreciation of hip-hop has only deepened over time. There's some truly impressive lyrical artists within the genre, and more than a few talented performance artists. It also has a lot of trashy pop music, but so does rock n roll or country. Country has a LOT of garbage in fact, and I would have despaired ever finding anything worth listening to if I didn't work with a bunch of boomers who unironically loved country music and blasted their playlist for the entire shift. 95% of it sucked, but occasionally there was a song on there that I could enjoy.
