Russia in the 20th century (or after the war and until the collapse of the USSR) was in a position of strength that was actually anomalous in the longer arc of its history. Russia today is returning to the median in which its relative power is more on the level of a Germany or Japan. There was an overcorrection to the downside in the 1990s but it won't return to its Soviet superpower glory in this century at least.
