the most proeminent however will be the Beast of the Sea of Nations and Peoples. Considering its a many-headed beast whose fatal wounds heal, its more than likely to be either : A) a system put into place from which the poeple cannot physically destroy, B) an idea - a meme - that nothing can physically hurt, at least not permanently, and literally revives itself, or C) a literal regenerating beast, though I have reservation at taking Apocalypse at shallow, face value.
The Beast of the Sea eventually end up being worshipped as the "Image of the Beast" - which, according to scripture, ends up being either a golem or an AI, as unbelievable as it may sound, since it speaks its own words and commands worship of itself - by all people of the Earth, indirectly feeding into worship of the Dragon (AKA Satan) who gave it authority to establish that cult (basically a mystery cult which only the highest echelon understand the real power behind the cult).
Then there's the Beast of the Earth - which is repeatedly stated to be the domain of Satan, btw - the other Antichrist candidate, and this one is more likely to be a person than a system. He's basically the mouth of the Dragon, speaking its words, and will command the entire world to worship the Image of the Beast or die. He'll also brand all believers in the Image of the Beast with his own mark.

The antichrist couldn't show up today because the prophecies are well known enough that if anybody actually tried that shit everyone would instantly know it was him. They will probably come in 5,000 years or so when Christians have significantly declined as a % of the human population.
