how commonplace was dyed clothing in medieval times among the commoners?
a quick online search says that even peasants wore a mix of dyed and undyed clothing, since weld, woad, madder meant access to yellow, blue, and red even among the lower classes
but none of them are really authoritative sources nor do they mention any

some people are telling me that people in medieval times were too poor to afford dyed clothes and too overworked to be able to dye it themselves, since all their waking hours would be devoted to farming and housework
and so wore primarily undyed clothing
dyers existing primarily to serve the upper class and not the peasants, on that matter

any good reading on these kinds of things?

Does linen dyed brown from mud and soil, some green from grass and yellow from dandelions count?

When mediaeval peasants started to move into towns and make nicer clothes to sell to other peasants who were rapidly becoming wealthe enough to buy them, the nobles got mad and petitioned the King to ban them from being able to purchase certain types of garments and colours which were reserved for those of the appropriate social class.
