How were they able to live and thrive in the south when slavery was race based? Wouldn't they have just ben enslaved?

They either escaped to the North or joined settlers to live out west on the Frontier where men were truly free and the only justice was not northern or southern justice but frontier justice (the only true form of justice)

They were often mixed race and either lived in urban areas of the south, especially New Orleans, or in marginal zones with poor whites and Indians.
