I don't get it. Who were they? The new papers just make everything more confusing. And why were they so short compared to Yamna?

It all depends on what samples are used for average height. "Corded Ware" isn't an ethnicity. They're much too heterogenous. Only the very early Corded Ware samples are very similar. The rest of the Corded Ware is across the board with EEF and HG ancestry. Since Yamnaya was on average taller than EEF we can attribute the shorter height of Corded Ware generally to increasing EEF ancestry.

The pure steppe ancestors of many Europeans aren't even the core Yamnaya group. It's more like the IE expansion involved a lot of people with a bit more Ukraine_N. It could also be a common founder effect.

Does anyone have height statistics on Ukraine_N by the way?

craniometrically the corded ware were also extremely dolichocephalic and narrow headed, even more than the average EEF, i'm not surprised about their short stature, they inherited an ANF phenotype in general

What's the torso length though?
Just in case you don't know, malnutrition shortens limbs, torso length is far more stable and hereditary(the best would be wrist circumference but I doubt you can accurately measure it from a skeleton).

They looked like yamnaya
And they were very homogeneous, when they mixed with GACs, they created New branches, such as fatyanovo, battle axe, bell beakers etc
Yamnaya was more tall due their diet

Corded ware selected for manletism after leaving the steppes where you needed to be big and strong to survive
