>>17804215>Been meaning to get this. How is it?it's definitely not an introductory book about the glorious revolution. Pincus assumes that the reader has at least a modicum of knowledge about the glorious revolution and the principal players.
Its point is the glorious revolution wasn't a peaceful revolt against catholicism (most people were fine with james coming to power and didn't support the monmouth rebels) but a violent revolt against french absolutism and a transformation of england into a state based on the dutch model. Pincus focuses a lot on the violence to disprove historian's like macaulays idea that it was a peaceful transfer of power- there were street battles between civilians and the army, riots, mass sackings of catholic chapels and protestant militias in the thousands patrolling the countryside after rumors of irish troops pillaging englishmen spread and inflamed the populace.
