Sunni, it is the original version version of Islam practiced in the time of the prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). If anything, it is Shias who are a heretical splinter group.

The Sunni version of history is literally based on the idea that you're not allowed to think anything bad about the Sunni side in its dispute with Ali over the caliphate. It is mandatory to instead believe that everyone involved were friends with Ali and just happened to be at war with him, and they were not at war for any selfish reason whatsoever. For example, for one of the Sunni historical figures, they say she went to war against Ali out of a desire to reconcile with him. Literal doublespeak.

Make of that what you will. Personally I can't take such an approach to history seriously, where it's impermissible to draw the most obvious and rational conclusion from the facts as they happened. So by process of elimination, if the Sunnis were wrong the Shias must have been right.

Shias were a historical underclass. Sunnis were dominant and still feel like the biggest kid on the block so they chimpout in more explosive ways once confronted with their current impotence

Both are quite estranged from islam's historical origins, but the Shias are closer to the historical truth. Sunnis however are closer to the spirit that rules over "Islam" as a concept, because it's a might-makes-right type of spirit.
