How did it become glorious for commanders to kill themselves in private, in the face of certain defeat? If they were ready to die, would it not be even more honorable to die in combat at the hands of the enemy?

Committing "honorable suicide" allows you to avoid mistreatment and dishonor if you are captured in battle, while also allowing you to avoid the accusation that you were a coward who feared death. That's the point.
