What does 'freedom' even mean? I don't think this really exists very much.

It's mostly just a meme. The masses don't actually yearn for freedom, they yearn for comfort and history has proven time and time again they're willing to give up any freedom they have to ensure the continuation of the level of comfort they're accustomed to. Revolutions only really start to happen when the people start going hungry.

Freedom is a lack of restrictions imposed on you by other people. If you don't live in a shithole then you are very free in many ways, but your daily life is so saturated with freedom that you cannot see it and thus take it for granted.

Cams here to post this. It’s the lack of restrictions. I would add, however, thar restrictions can be self imposed by succumbing to your vices. Drug addicts aren’t free.

‘Freedom’ exists in antithesis and requires you to have some form of captivity in order to even be a concept to begin with. You can only be “free” from something if you were enslaved to it to begin with. No one can come to a census about which ‘freedoms’ are most important because it’s not a self establishing concept. The alcoholic is ‘free’ to drink as much as he wants and the sober man is ‘free’ from the desire to drink. Both have “freedom” but both are entangled in their own forms of slavery despite having directly opposing goals; the alcoholic is enslaved to his drinking habits and the sober man is enslaved to his abstinence. The alcoholic may never stop drinking and the sober man may never start drinking else they lose their freedoms and adopt new slaveries. Freedom is only an attractive concept to captives, and it dissipates as soon as the captive obtains it.

I want to both agree and disagree, but it could just be a semantic thing. They are free to ruin their lives with drugs, freedom to make your own choices also means you have the freedom to make bad choices. Freedom can be weird in the sense that certain restrictions to your freedom actually makes you more free. People in society are not free to burglarize or murder their neighbors, but in turn this restriction make you more free because you now feel safe enough to leave your home and spouse unattended.

And what of the restrictions a man fails to impose on himself? A man who cannot get out of bed in the morning by his own will is enslaved to his sluggishness. Following his own will leads to his own captivity; he is his own worst enemy.

Even if he feels too fatigued and deterministically won't make the choice to leave the bed he still has the choice to in the colloquial sense of the word, the government or some third party aren't restricting his ability to get out of bed. I get that people can be enslaved/unfree from things like cigarettes in a sense, but IMO that's a more poetic and different way of using the word compared to what we normally mean when we say it in the context of freedom of speech or right to travel.

In the political sense of the term, offering severe lack of restrictions can lead to the creation of new ones. Freedom of speech that allows for ideas that actively promote censorship will inevitably cause platforms to lack freedom of speech, and allowing too much right to travel will cause a country to lose its populace entirely if other countries provide more attractive promises. Freedom in this sense can often be self defeating because freedoms are allowed to those who do not value the freedoms they’re given, allowing for the rise of its own demise by propagating adversaries who otherwise would never gain influence.

Actual true “freedom” is the ability to live life without financial, governmental, or corporate institutions crushing you with debt, oppressive laws, and rent seeking behavior. You’re able live your life in a way that promotes flourishing and meaningful human relationships.

Freedom is not lack of responsibility or government or society or laws, it’s the lack of dishonesty and cruelty that these things can impose on you if not kept in check. Thats why being armed and knowing your rights is the best guardian against tyranny.
