What is the long term significance of the moon landing?
The Apollo Program convinced the US government to pour billions of dollars into jumpstarting Americas space infrastructure that is still regularly used today, and it proved landing people on there was possible. Much of the Apollo Equipment even found use beyond the Apollo Program in other NASA spaceflight ventures.
Would America still have a space program and infrastructure without the Apollo Program? Sure, but it's likely it would've been built up far more slowly otherwise. The Apollo Program also provided jobs and economic stimulus after the Eisenhower Recession in the late 1950s put a lot of government and military employees out of work.
