I don't know, I'd guess the root of it is that certain activities that are pointless in themselves stimulate the same parts of the brain as activities that do have an evolutionary purpose, and thus give pleasure. For example a dog likes playing with a chew toy because it feels similar to what the dog really wants to do, instictively, which is attack prey. Also, for social animals, having fun together helps individuals bond, so it is beneficial in that way.

Evolution doesn’t have a purpose. It’s just that traits that aid survival and reproduction… will survive and reproduce. That’s it. It doesn’t have a will. A lot of extraneous shit is attached simply because it isn’t harmful. Also, most of the things we do for fun have their roots in evolutionarily beneficial functions
