National banks aren't perfect, and its true that they can create problems, but they solve a lot more problems than they create and are necessary for a modern industrial economy. Not having one led to the repeated boom and bust cycles of the mid-late 19th century, so it's not like rampant speculation didn't exist because there was no central bank. His issues with banks could have all been solved through sound regulation, and refusing to recharter the national bank is one of the few times in US history where a recession was caused by a stroke of the president's pen.
I do like a lot of the things Jackson did, but this was very foolish.
