American boomers didn’t pay any attention to their country’s politics when LBJ was president.

Because Nixon himself chose to own the war in 1970 and refused to do any meaningful peace negotiations until AFTER the pentagon papers came out. Only after millions of Americans took to the streets did Nixon chose to end it, on his terms, in his second term. By this point it was too late and as the PP scandal snowballed with the Watergate scandal his house of cards rapidly came down.

All Nixon had to do was cut and run exactly as Biden did in Afghanistan. Biden did what Americans wanted. And this is why Biden will be remembered as the last good President.

Who was president when the Gulf of Tonkin resolution was passed? ;)

They really did seem to hate him, but if you listen to the Nixon tapes, the feeling was mutual.

Nixon failed to consult Congress and get official, formal approval to get out. Sound familiar? Trump is doing the same thing but significantly more incompetently.

The 65-69 protests were pretty big

Nixon promised to end the war. After he was briefed he realized the US had been bombing Cambodia since 1965 in a secret operation called Operation Menu. He didn't stop these bombing outright so The New York Times leaked this and the communists in the US were pissed. Nixon was essentially blamed for expanding the war into other countries when that had been decided by LBJ.

They staged a protest at Kent state coinciding with May Day which is the international communist holiday. After attacking national guard with bricks stray shots fired above the protester's heads killed bystanders at the college. This is all part of the communist mythos. In their eyes Nixon was now worse than the people that started the war because in their eyes he was now using unrestricted warfare against the entire region which was something their saviors, JFK and LBJ, didn't do to their knowledge.

Joseph Lewis Jr, admits to taking LSD, smoking weed and drinking, fucking random strange women, taking social worker classes in college. Grandfather was a Slovakian immigrant. 2:1 ratio of women to men on the college campus, dozens of bars open in town with live music every night.

"People came from all over Ohio to party." Everybody hated it. "Campuses around the country were in the same situation"

"I blame President Nixon and Governor Rhodes for the murders at Kent State."

April 30, 1970 Nixon gives a speech saying that he's going to launch a forward offensive into Cambodia to weaken the Communists to allow the US to pull out safely of Vietnam.

"The campuses erupted." "I watched people unsuccessfully multiple times try to set the ROTC building on fire." "I joined the crowd asking people to join us to set the ROTC building on fire." "We went to the local highway and blocked traffic, pulled construction equipment out from under a bridge and blocked traffic." "Some protestors went and put the equipment back." "When we got back to campus the national guard were there."

"I ran back to my dormitory and saw the ROTC building in flames, I suspect it was a false flag." "I thought WOW, what the hell?" "The next day there were 900 national guard on campus." "Rhodes came to the campus and called the student protestors the worst people in the US."

"The national guard declared there would be no assemblies of protestors and established a curfew." "Protestors immediately violated the curfew and sat in the street and blocked traffic." "At curfew they were hit with tear gas." "Three helicopters were also circling the campus."

"We assumed the guns had blanks in them and students were throwing things from the dorm windows at the guards that night."

"Monday was classes as normal." "My sociology professor convinced me to go out and protest some more."

"Guards told us to disperse and we didn't so they fired tear gas, it was windy so you could cover your face with your shirt and throw the tear gas back at them." "That was a mistake."

"The moved forward and split the crowd." "We assembled on the hilltop above the guardsmen and saw the guardsmen get in a firing position looking at the worse of the protestors." "They were throwing gravel at the national guard." "The guardsmen were very irritated." "Most of the dead were from this crowd." "A small group of guardsmen left back up the hill walking directly towards me." "I moved out of the way and was very near to them." "They kept looking over their shoulders at the protestors throwing rocks." "I suspected the were picking targets." "The first guardsmen saw me and took a firing position and aimed at me." "I gave them the middle finger." "I thought I was in a theatrical street theater." "I heard gunshots and was on the ground, I realized the guns didn't have blanks in them." "It was just a flesh wound."

Notice he doesn't say if he was given any orders to disperse

There’s nothing wrong with shooting terrorist agitators. Hopefully we can expand operations and declare martial law to remove the foreign terrorists in LA with our brave guardsmen and women.

Mostly in movies I noticed, they depict LBJ and his admin as well meaning people who bungled it up despite the Gulf of Tonkin having been a very clear false flag with the intention of getting us probable cause for invading. By contrast, Nixon is usually depicted as having prolonged the war for personal gain. Irl it was like the exact opposite of that with a warmongering LBJ starting a false flag and Nixon being in to deep to really do anything that would please either side. Ultimately one side of his base would end up pissed off whether he had stayed or left.
